Current Trade Proposal Could Bring Justin Fields to Seahawks

With a bank full of draft picks and a potential out in Geno Smith's contract, the Seahawks are urged to look at a blockbuster trade scenario.

Last offseason, on the heels of a career season, the Seahawks inked quarterback Geno Smith to the three-year, $75 million deal. Smith has taken a step back this season, and while not performing poorly, necessarily, his performance has at times caused a few head scratches.

If there's a chance to upgrade at the most important position in the game, Seattle has to at least look at it.

As the Chicago Bears have just locked up the No. 1 pick in April's NFL Draft, there's every chance they could be in the market for a trade while they still have Justin Fields on the roster. The way the picks shake out, it's possible that the Bears have two top 10 picks in the upcoming draft thanks to the Panthers' deal with them as part of the trade to move up to No. 1 in the last draft. 

So who would be available for Seattle to snag?

Former Heisman Trophy winner and star USC quarterback Caleb Williams is widely regarded as the most likely No. 1 overall pick this April.

ESPN’s Dan Graziano makes the argument as to why Chicago may consider trading the No. 1 pick for the second straight year.

“I do not know what the Bears will ultimately do in the lead-up to the draft,” Graziano wrote in a December 31, 2023 article titled, “Judging biggest overreactions for NFL Week 17.

“Fields has played well down the stretch, as the Bears appear to have rallied around embattled coach Matt Eberflus, possibly even saving Eberflus’ job. Trading away the top pick, amassing more picks and using them to build around Fields is a legitimate option. Some might even say it’s their best one.”

The Panthers also have the No. 9 overall pick, and moving up to take Williams would cost Seattle a premium of picks.

Last offseason the Bears got four picks and standout receiver D.J. Moore to move down just nine spots in exchange for the No. 1 pick. They also got the No. 9 and. No. 61 picks in the upcoming draft and a 2024 first-round pick and a 2025 second-round pick. 

It would probably take a similar-looking package for the Seahawks to be able to select Williams.
