Seattle Seahawks special-teamer Chris Maragos, a team member from 2011 to 2013, has been awarded $43.5 million as the result of a lawsuit against doctors who have been found guilty of "medical negligence.''

“We’re really grateful and thankful for the outcome,” Maragos said via The Philadelphia Inquirer. “We had the truth on our side and the jury saw it.”

Maragos, 36, who was a defensive back on the team, injured his knee in 2017 while playing for the Philadelphia Eagles and was under the care of doctors who, the court found, ignored additional damage to his knee in order to hurry the team captain back onto the field.

“I watched someone that was confident and strong and secure completely deteriorate,” wife Serah testified. “You watch someone ... from being a professional athlete to being unable to get up without a limp.”

Maragos, who was a part of Super Bowl-winning teams in Seattle and in Philadelphia, ultimately retired in 2019 after being unable to recover from his knee problems.

The trial was high-profile in Philadelphia as it also featured testimony from former Eagles players, including Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles, tight end Trey Burton, and linebacker Jordan Hicks.

The attorney for the doctors said the star-studded witness list, had “enormous impact'' on the outcome of the trial.

"That’s an awful strong tide to swim against,” he said.

Operating surgeon Dr. James Bradley was ordered to pay $29.2 million, and Rothman Orthopaedics Institute, the team physicians for the Eagles in 2017, was ordered to pay $14.3 million.

Said Maragos attorney Dion G. Rassias: "This case and this jury may have changed the course of history by now forcing these team doctors and trainers to stop worrying about when a player might return to play and start thinking about the next 50 years of a player’s life.”
