New Report Claims Mason Rudolph is Done With Steelers

The Pittsburgh Steelers will not have the option to bring back Mason Rudolph.

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers are not getting Mason Rudolph back even if they want to, despite initial reports claiming he's "open" to returning for another season.

According to TribLive's Tim Benz, the backup quarterback would be open to a return as long as the Steelers moved on from Mitch Trubisky. As of now, Trubisky is set to take on over $10 million in cap space this season, and Pittsburgh could save $8 million if they released or traded him.

During an appearance on 93.7 The Fan, The Athletic's Mark Kaboly refuted that claim, saying Rudolph is "done" with the Steelers and will move on this offseason.

"I think Mason might be playing a game. His agent might be playing a game," Kaboly said. "Trust me, I’ve talked to Mason a number of times. He’s pretty much done with the Steelers, and rightfully so."

Rudolph does have a right to want out of Pittsburgh. After being the team's third-round pick, he was immediately shunned by future Hall of Famer Ben Roethlisberger. Then, when told he would get an opportunity to compete for the starting job this past summer, he was removed from the competition almost instantly.

He was then given another shot during the season when Kenny Pickett went down with a concussion and was once again overlooked for Trubisky.

All of this took place while teams were looking for new quarterbacks on the trade market because of injuries. The Steelers never tried to trade Rudolph to a better situation.

It'll be difficult for Rudolph to find a starting chance in the NFL this season, but he could earn a bigger role than what he had in Pittsburgh this past season.

Rudolph is 5-4-1 as a starter in the NFL.
