Maulers Lose USFL Championship to Stallions

The Pittsburgh Maulers fall to the Birmingham Stallions in the USFL Championship.

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Maulers came close but couldn't bring a title to the city of champions, falling to the Birmingham Stallions, 28-12, in the USFL Championship game. 

The Maulers took the first lead of the night as kicker Chris Blewitt made his first of four field goals during the matchup. He finished the night 4/5. 

Pittsburgh fell behind by halftime, hitting the midway point down 14-9. From there, they weren't able to regain the edge as the Stallions scored another touchdown to go up 21-12 heading into the fourth. 

With two touchdowns already on his stat chart, former Pittsburgh Steelers receiver Deon Cain caught his third touchdown of the night as the Stallions finished off the win, going up 28-12. 

Cain finished the game with 70 receiving yards and 101 kick return yards. His quarterback, Alex McGough, completed 18 of 25 passes for 243 yards and four touchdowns. He also ran for 64 yards. 

The Maulers fought their way into the championship game after finishing the regular season with a 4-6 record, placing first in the North Division. In a shootout semifinal matchup with the Michigan Panthers, they took home the overtime victory, 31-27. 

The Stallions had a clean win over the New Orleans Breakers, 47-22, on their way to the championship game. After finishing the season with the best record in the league, heading into the postseason 8-2. Two final wins in the playoffs and they walk away 2023 champions. 

Players can sign with NFL teams and hope to earn roster spots during training camp. Teams will begin reporting to camp at the end of July. For the Steelers, names like Reuben Foster and Mark Gilbert have been floated around as suggested signings.
