Report: Steelers' Mike Tomlin Will Decide Future After Season

The Pittsburgh Steelers head coach is believed to be mulling his future with the team.

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers are preparing for the Buffalo Bills and a game that has plenty of uncertainty, including the date and location of the Wild Card matchup. But whenever Pittsburgh's playoff run ends, head coach Mike Tomlin will take some time to consider his future.

According to NBC Sports' Mike Florio, the Steelers' head coach will step back once the season ends and evaluate whether or not he wants to continue coaching in Pittsburgh.

"This year is a unique position for Mike Tomlin for the first time ever, he’s entering the last year of his contract," Florio said. "I’m told he’s going to step back after the season ends, make a decision about his future with his family. He loves the team, the loves the young players there, but after the season, he’ll huddle with his family and make a decision about the Steelers."

Tomlin's contract is set to expire after the 2024 season, but according to the Associate Press' Will Graves, this is not the first time the head coach signed a deal just before the final year of his current contract.

Steelers President Art Rooney II said during training camp last summer that he expects a deal to be done with Tomlin before his current one expires.

"We’ve done the contract at different points and people seem to read more into that than is warranted," Rooney told Steelers Nation Radio. "The contract will get done when it needs to get done. As Omar said, I expect Mike to be here a lot longer than the existing contract. We’ll get it done when the time comes."

Tomlin acknowledged prior to the season that he has more years behind him than in front of him, but from the sounds of those in the building and Rooney himself, the Steeler's head coach will likely sign an extension before next season begins.
