Steelers Get Estimated Contract for Former Jets OT

The Pittsburgh Steelers could look at a former first-round pick to add to their offensive line.

PITTSBURGH -- Could the Pittsburgh Steelers add an offensive tackle with versatility and, maybe, some first-round potential? With Dan Moore Jr. as their starter right now, the team is still looking for an addition to their offensive line, and a former New York Jet may be their answer.

Mehki Becton is still just 24 years old and has 30 games of starting experience, playing both left and right tackle. The former 11th overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft was once viewed as one of the best up-and-coming lineman in the NFL, but after some injuries set his game back, he's now looking for a redemption contract.

Which may be with the Steelers. Pro Football Focus' Brad Spielberger believes Becton's next contract may be a cheap one. He predicts the offensive tackle will sign a one-year deal in the ballpark of $5 million, looking for an opportunity to redeem his career with a new team.

The Steelers will likely add an offensive tackle to their roster in the NFL Draft, but even if they do, Becton could be an option. He's got the capability to play either right or left tackle, which Moore does not contain. His experience makes him a reliable backup, and best case scenario, he turns into the 11th overall pick he was expected to be.

This is a win-win for the Steelers. A cheap option who provides better swing tackle value than their current veteran, both playing on one-year deals. Hopefully, an early-round pick can become their starter and the team can move forward after the season with some young and improving options.

But in 2024, Becton should certainly be viewed as a potential signing - and one that makes a lot of sense.
