Three Texans Matchups We Wish Were on 2023 Schedule

The Houston Texans won't face these intriguing teams in 2023 unless it comes during the postseason.

The Houston Texans learned their full 2023 schedule last week, a slate that, in addition to tilts with the three other AFC South teams, will also include matchups with the Baltimore Ravens, Cincinnati Bengals, and New York Jets.

Still, there are a handful of other intriguing teams that it would have been interesting to see C.J. Stroud and the Texans face in 2023. Here are three:

New England Patriots

Has Bill Belichick lost his fastball, both as the head coach and top executive, in
New England? The Texans would be an interesting test in 2023, as Belichick has traditionally smothered rookie quarterbacks. Additionally, Texans general manager Nick Caserio spent two decades in the Patriots organization, so that would be an interesting narrative in the days leading up to the game.

San Francisco 49ers

Speaking of Belichick, there's been a weird trend throughout his illustrious career where former assistants seem to have success against him. 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan may very well be the brightest coach in the sport today, so it would be interesting to see if his former defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans -- now the head coach in Houston -- would have any success slowing down a significantly more talented 49ers team. Perhaps it will be more interesting a few years from now when Ryans has had a chance to install his culture in Houston.

Washington Commanders

As part of the trade to move back into the top five and select Will Anderson Jr., the Texans won't have their own first-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. Still, this matchup would be a good measuring stick for the Texans as they try to shed the label as the worst team in the sport. On top of that, the results of this game could very well impact how high the draft pick that the Arizona Cardinals acquired in the trade with Houston will be.
