Texans Not Likely To Trade Up With Bears For No. 1 Pick in NFL Draft

General manager Nick Caserio made it clear that the Houston Texans are not thinking about making a trade for the No. 1 pick nor other quarterback-needy teams moving ahead.

HOUSTON — The Houston Texans could have had the top overall selection entering the 2023 NFL Draft. But a season finale victory against the Indianapolis Colts on Jan. 8 led to the Texans entering the draft with the No. 2 pick.

The Chicago Bears have the top overall selection.

But according to ESPN, the Bears have received several calls regarding teams interested in trading for the No. 1 pick. But Houston appears unlikely to make a move for the top pick and is nonchalant about their counterparts jumping one spot ahead.

"I think we’re focused on the Texans," general manager Nick Caserio said. "We’re not necessarily worried about what other teams around us are doing. You’re cognizant of that, but ultimately you have to be prepared to pick wherever you’re going to pick. Then, be prepared to pick whatever player."

It's no secret the Texans are targeting one of the top two quarterback prospects in C.J. Stroud or Bryce Young.

Houston is in a primary position to have their choice between the two players. But several teams who have expressed interest in trading with the Bears are quarterback-needy.

The Colts are one of the teams who can afford to move ahead of the Texans to elect Stroud or Young. Indianapolis sits with the No. 4 pick following a disappointing 2022 campaign. The Colts finished the season 4-12-1 with Matt Ryan under center.

"Most teams, wherever they pick, probably have three or four guys that you would feel comfortable taking," Caserio said. "If a team is in front of you and you’re only talking about one player, then it’s going to leave two to three other players.

"You can’t really get too caught up in what other teams are doing. You just try to make decisions that you feel are best for your team and your situation."

Other quarterback-needy teams who can move ahead of the Texans for the No. 1 pick are the Las Vegas Raiders, Carolina Panthers and New York Jets.
