QB Bryce Young Would 'Love' to Reunite With Former Alabama Teammates on Texans

With the possibility of drafting Bryce Young in April, the Houston Texans could reunite the quarterback with his college teammate John Metchie from Alabama.

HOUSTON — When the Houston Texans drafted John Metchie in April 2022, the idea was to enhance the wide receivers corps to give Davis Mills enough weapons.

Metchie will upgrade the Texans' position group when he returns from his battle with Leukemia this coming season. But instead of taking the field with Mills, there is a possibility Metchie will be playing alongside his former college quarterback Bryce Young.

Houston is in the running to draft Young with their No. 2 pick of the 2023 NFL Draft. The selection of Young would not only reunite the quarterback prospect with Metchie. But the addition of Young would also mark a reunion with linebacker Christian Harris.

"I love Christian Harris and John Metchie," Young said. "For me, were I end up is something I can’t control. I’m going to give my all to whatever team it is that takes me. I’m just super excited to be here."

Metchie and Young played one full season together at Alabama.

Their lone campaign together coincides with Young's Heisman season, where they led Alabama to a 13-2 record in 2021. Metchie recorded 96 catches for a career-best 1,142 yards and eight touchdowns.

He sustained an ACL injury during the 2021 SEC Championship Game in December. When the Texans drafted him, Metchie vowed to be "full-go football" by the start of training camp, but the diagnosis of Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia sidelined him for the entire 2022 season.

The Texans are in the best position to land Young. And unless another quarterback-needy team elects to trade for the No. 1 pick from the Chicago Bears, Young will likely be the Texans' starting quarterback come Week 1 of the 2023 campaign — alongside Metchie.

"I know Bryce is an outstanding leader from what I've seen, and an outstanding quarterback," coach DeMeco Ryans said. "It's no surprise the success that he's had. Just because of the makeup, the type of guy that he is. Wishing him the best moving forward."
