Andre Johnson Predicts 'Surprise' in Texans Future

Houston Texans Ring of Honor receiver Andre Johnson looks forward to the team's future and has advice for the rookies.

Andre Johnson spent 12 years with the Houston Texans, amassing 1,012 receptions for 13,597 yards and 64 touchdowns - all franchise records.

The legendary receiver is a member of Houston's Ring of Honor and spoke with Marc Vandermeer about a few members of the Texans organization who may have a shot at joining him on the prestigious stage in the future.

Texans new coach DeMeco Ryans was a standout linebacker for Houston from 2006-2011. Johnson and Ryans were teammates throughout that span and built a solid relationship. Johnson said he's really looking forward to his former teammate's new role.

"I think everybody's excited," Johnson said. "Just being around in the city of Houston hearing people talk about it and the excitement around it. Football has become very popular in Houston. I think we have a great chance at accomplishing some great things in his first year. I would just tell people, 'Don't be surprised."

Ryans was the San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator before being hired by Houston this offseason. He brought along former 49ers offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik for the same position. Johnson, who went through several coaching/coordinating changes throughout his career, explained that the players just have to pay attention to everything.

"I think the biggest thing, even in OTAs, is that everything is very detailed," Johnson said. "As a player, you have to understand the whole system, not just your individual position. As long as the guys pay attention to the details, they'll do what they have to do and everything will work out."

Houston continued making a splash in the offseason by drafting Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud second overall and trading up to select Alabama edge rusher Will Anderson Jr. with the very next pick.

Johnson delivered advice to Stroud, Anderson and the rest of the rookies.

"Don't put too much pressure on yourself," Johnson said. "Just go out there and play. At the end of the day, it's still football, just moved up another level. Everything counts, but just keep your head down, work your butt off, pay attention to details and just try to learn as much as you can day in and day out. I think if they do that they'll be fine."

Before the Texans' young roster's careers flash before our eyes and potentially joins the Ring of Honor, one former player will be initiated into the prestigious group on Oct. 1.

Former Texans defensive end J.J. Watt, who was also teammates with Johnson and Ryans, was a five-time All-Pro and three-time Defensive Player of the Year before he retired at the end of last season.

Johnson said that he looks forward to Watt's big day, officially joining him as one of the best players to don the deep steel blue and battle red.

"What J.J. did for this organization throughout his time here was amazing," Johnson said. "He's a great player and a great friend. The stadium will be rocking and everyone will be excited to have him back here. I can't wait to see him get his jacket and go in the Ring of Honor."

The Texans Ring of Honor journey continues for Ryans, but for Stroud, Anderson and the rest of the rookies, it begins on July 28, the first day of training camp.
