RB Devin Singletary 'On a Mission' With Texans

Following the end of mandatory minicamp, running back Devin Singletary showcased the mindset coach DeMeco Ryans wants to build his team around.

HOUSTON — The Houston Texans are three weeks away from the start of training camp, and coach DeMeco Ryans wanted his players to take it easy following the end of mandatory minicamp in June

"I told our guys, this just only sets you up to come back in training camp and compete for that job because we’re all competing," Ryans said. "Guys are in a good spot right now and we’re leaving on a really good note. Guys are confident in what they’re doing, what we’re asking of them and that’s all we wanted to make sure [of]."

Several players were looking ahead to the month-long break for a chance to relax before going through the gauntlet of training camp. But veteran running back Devin Singletary said he would choose the latter.

Singletary signed a one-year, $3.75 million contract with the Texans in March. He will upgrade Houston's backfield by playing alongside Dameon Pierce as running back No. 2. But Singletary's desire to remain on the practice field is a testament to the work ethic that led to a successful four-year tenure with the Buffalo Bills.

The 25-year-old has accumulated 3,151 yards on the ground on 672 carries with 16 touchdowns with the Bills. His most effective attribute came as a pass-catcher, where he recorded 145 catches for 971 yards and four touchdowns.

Singletary's mindset showcases that the Texans are ready to take the next step in their rebuild, and his mentality will result in Houston winning more than three games in 2023.

"My mindset is, 'it’s not really time to chill,'" Singletary said. "We’re on a mission and I understand that. I want to be a big part of that mission. So, I’m going to take a few days off and then get right back to it."

During his introductory press conference in February, Ryans said his goal was to add players who could bring a winning mentality to NRG Stadium. The Texans may not be in the running for the playoffs next season. But Singletary's attitude will help Ryans get closer to his objectives as coach of the Texans.

"We want players that have a special work ethic and a relentless mindset in everything that they do," Ryans said. "That's what you're going to see from Texans football."
