'You’ve Got to be Able to Run': Is Running Back Texans' Biggest Position of Need?

Despite a career season from Devin Singletary, is running back the Houston Texans' biggest position of need?

HOUSTON — Devin Singletary gave the Houston Texans a significant boost in their rushing attack midway through the 2023 season. They struggled to run the ball until Singletary rushed for a career-best 150 yards during their Week 10 victory against the Cincinnati Bengals on Nov. 12.

He rushed for over 100 yards three times as the Texans' starting running back. And as one of a handful of players set to become a free agent on March 15, Houston should have interest in re-signing Singletary.

But whether a deal with Singletary gets done or not, improving their offensive backfield should be Houston's top priority when examining five positions that could use a major upgrade this offseason.

"I think the running game will be significant for us to improve upon," coach DeMeco Ryans said. "I think as you see as you go throughout this game, especially in the postseason, teams that win games – you’ve got to be able to run the football and sustain it. And we weren’t able to accomplish that versus the Ravens, and it showed up. So, we [definitely] have areas to improve – many different areas – but the run game is one of those areas."

Each position in need of an upgrade has at least a cornerstone or reliable contributor in place. The Texans have to improve their cornerback and safety unit. Yet, any defensive back Houston will add to its roster will automatically play second fiddle to Derek Stingley Jr., while Jalen Pitre and Jimmie Ward will remain the premiere safeties despite a disappointing season.

The interior defensive line could also use an upgrade. However, re-signing Khalil Davis and Sheldon Rankins will keep Houston's interior as a trustworthy unit, given the return of Maliek Collins and Kurt Hinish.

Houston must improve their tight end unit entering the 2024 season. But re-signing Dalton Schultz would only help boost the position group.

Singletary has proven to be Houston's most dependable and only option in the backfield.

Re-signing Singletary would be in the Texans' best interest. But bringing in another high-profile running back would not only boost the Texans' rushing attack. The acquisition would also allow Singletary to utilize his attributes more as a pass catcher and someone who can help improve Houston's blocking.

Singletary became the Texans' premiere back following the second-year decline of Dameon Pierce, who finished the 2023 season with 416 yards and two touchdowns.

"We’ll see where all of the guys and all the positions on our team," Ryans said. "We’ll look at the roster – me and Nick [Caserio] – and see where we are and where we have to improve our roster, and I think that’s our job is to continue to improve our roster as best as we can."

The Texans will have their fair share of prospects when upgrading their offensive backfield. The 2024 off-season will feature several productive players, headlined by New York Giants' Saquon Barkley. Other notable free agents at the position are Josh Jacobs (Las Vegas Raiders), Derrick Henry (Tennessee Titans) and Tony Pollard Dallas Cowboys).
