Chara, the Bruins' captain, was hurt in a 3-2 loss to the New York Islanders on Thursday night. Chara suffered the injury when he hit the Islanders' John Tavares in the first period, according to the team. Chara did not return to the game after the period.

General manager Peter Chiarelli said it doesn't appear likely that Chara will undergo surgery, "but anything can happen with anything. I can't give you a 100% statement."

The 37-year-old Chara leads the Bruins in minutes played this season, and he has never missed more than five games during his nine seasons with the Bruins. According to ESPN.com's Joe McDonald, the Bruins are 8-7-5 without Chara in the lineup since 2006.
