Watch: Daniel Alfredsson warms up with Senators before retiring

Though Daniel Alfredsson last played in the NHL for the Detroit Red Wings, he will always be an Ottawa Senator.

After back problems derailed his hopes of training camp and a return for the 2014-15 season, Alfredsson announced his retirement in a press conference Thursday morning.

Alfredsson signed a one-day contract that allowed him to retire as a member of the Senators. He took warmups with the team and participated in the ceremonial puck drop before the Senators’ contest against the New York Islanders on Thursday.

The Senators honored Alfredsson with a video tribute to his illustrious career, the crowd chanting “Alfie, Alfie” as he emerged from the tunnel one last time.

Alfredsson made a splash in the summer of 2013 by leaving Ottawa, where he’d played his entire career to that point, and signing in Detroit. The Swedish right wing ended his career with the Sens with 1,178 games, 426 goals, 682 assists and 1,108 points, all franchise records.

During his one season with Detroit, Alfredsson scored 18 goals and had 31 assists in 68 games.
