NHL exploring expansion to Las Vegas
NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said the league’s Board of Governors has no problem letting billionaire businessman Bill Foley explore bringing an expansion team to Las Vegas, according to the Associated Press.
Bettman said although they allowed Foley to go ahead with his plans to look into expansion for Las Vegas, nothing has been finalized as there are concerns with Las Vegas being able to support a franchise.
"There is no formal expansion process," Bettman said, according to the AP. "There is no vote that was taken today. There is no vote that was contemplated. We don't have an agreement to sell anybody an expansion process."
The league has not expanded since adding Columbus Blue Jackets and the Minnesota Wild for the 2000 season, putting the NHL at 30 teams.

Bettman said there are other cities with varying interests at landing a team, but says the NHL hasn’t looked at Las Vegas and there is no timeline when they will even begin talks about expanding the league.
