Twitter Stats: Hockey's most tweeted players and moments in 2014
The folks over at Twitter are taking a look back at the past year and have revealed their list of what got sports fans abuzz. The full breakdown includes plenty of World Cup and Super Bowl 48, but hockey—both NHL and Olympic—had it share of trend-worthy topics.
The 2014 Stanley Cup Final between the Kings and Rangers was one of the most tweeted-about events of the year. The five-game series featured plenty of star power and two of the biggest markets in the country, though Justin Williams stole the show—on the ice and on Twitter, despite not having a presence on the social media site.
Ice hockey was the biggest topic at the Sochi Winter Games where Canada took the gold medal over Sweden, with Finland grabbing the bronze. T.J. Oshie became a legend for his performance in Team USA's eight-round shootout win over Russia, a game that was 24 years in the making though both teams failed to live up to enormous expectations in the tournament. The U.S women's team ran roughshod over the field only to be stopped by archnemesis Canada in a heartbreaking (for American fans) gold medal game.
