Watch: North Dakota’s Nick Schmaltz scores stunning goal

North Dakota sophomore Nick Schmaltz submitted his entry for Goal of the Year with a dazzling tally against Western Michigan on Friday.

Nick Schmaltz, the Chicago Blackhawks’ first-round pick in the 2014 draft, is making quite a name for himself this season as one of the leading scorers on the second-ranked NCAA team in the nation.

Although the University North Dakota sophomore forward is known as much more of a playmaker than a goal scorer, he put in a bid to have scored the collegiate goal of the year against Western Michigan on Friday.

Yowza, that’s pretty.

The goal was Schmaltz’s fifth of the season to go along with 26 assists in 28 games this season for the Fighting Hawks. His 1.07 points per game entering the weekend was tied for 38th best among college skaters. He is the younger brother of Blues prospect Jordan, a former North Dakota defenseman. 

Not to be outdone, teammate Brock Boeser, a freshman drafted in the first round by the Canucks in 2015, did his best impression of Schmaltz soon after.

The Fighting Hawks are ranked second in the national polls and has clinched at least a share of the National Collegiate Hockey Conference title heading into the final weekend of regular season play.
