The 2016 Stanley Cup Playoffs have already seen video review play a big part in key moments. On Saturday in Dallas, the first goal of Game 2 between the Stars and Wild was one of the most bizarre plays you’re going to see.
A puck shot below the goal line by Ales Hemsky was deflected high off the foot of Antoine Roussel. The puck went airborne after hitting his skate and landed on the letters of Devan Dubnyk’s back. The Wild goaltender backed up with the puck still on him and knocked the net off its moorings as the puck crossed the goal line. The play was emphatically waved off by the on-ice official.
Roussel, who thought his first career playoff goal would not count, was visibly upset.
After a long review, the play was overturned and deemed a good goal to give the Stars a 1–0 lead. Here is the overhead view that gives a clear visual of how it occurred.
