NBC Olympics host Bob Costas is headed to the sidelines because of his eye infections.

NBC said Costas will be replaced on Tuesday night's prime-time broadcast by ''Today'' anchor Matt Lauer.

Costas has been wearing glasses since the start of the Sochi Olympics because of an infection that reddened his left eye. On Monday's broadcast, it was apparent the infection had spread to his other eye. It has become the topic of much conversation on social media.

Costas told Lauer on the ''Today'' show Tuesday morning that NBC is going to the bullpen, ''and you're Mariano Rivera.''
