Robotic Cameras at Sochi

The robotic camera is a solution that allows SI to put a camera in places it traditionally would have no access to. That was the case in Sochi, where SI used two robotic units. One was in Adler Arena for Speed Skating, mounted on the lighting truss hanging from the ceiling above the track. Since there was no catwalk over the track, that was the only way to get these unique perspectives. The second was in Fisht Stadium for both Opening and Closing Ceremonies, again hanging from a lighting truss above the audience. The robotic camera rig allows us to pan, tilt, zoom, focus, trigger, and transmit images.This is all controlled from our office in the MPC via Vlan. Also, our robotic has a third axes in addition to pan and tilt, which is the ability to roll. This gives us an added advantage when composing images. Gear: Camera- Nikon D4 Lens-Nikon 24-120mm Robotic Rig- Mark Roberts Motion Control Software: Nikon Multi Camera Control. This software allows us to control multiple cameras remotely. Since before the London 2012 we have been working closely with Nikon and Mark Roberts Motion Control on robotics.
