NEW YORK (AP) Basketball's governing body says Brazil must settle ''significant outstanding dues'' to receive automatic qualification into the 2016 Olympics.

The host nation traditionally is granted spots into the men's and women's tournaments, and FIBA says the Brazilian Basketball Confederation has applied for consideration for the Rio Games.

FIBA said Monday in a statement that Brazil ''has a rich sporting history in basketball,'' but it gave the federation a July 31 deadline to settle the debts to be granted the automatic berths.

The U.S. men and women are the only teams qualified thus far after winning world titles in 2014. Most spots will be determined this summer through regional qualifying tournaments.
