Hamburg has lost its referendum in its bid to host the 2024 Summer Olympic Games after receiving only 48.3% support from people, Mayor Olaf Scholz announced. More than 50% was needed to move forward with the bid.

Germany has not hosted an Olympics since the 1972 Summer Games in Munich. German voters also rejected a bid by Munich to host the 2022 Winter Olympics.

Germany could be in the running to host the 2024 UEFA European Football Championship since several soccer stadiums are already in place. Building infrastructure for the Olympics does not appear to be as favorable for the public.

The race to host the 2024 Olympics is down to four cities: Budapest, Los Angeles, Paris and Rome. The host city will be selected at the 2017 International Olympic Committee Session in Lima, Peru.

Los Angeles was selected as the United States Olympic Committee’s second attempt at a bid for the 2024 Summer Games, after Boston withdrew its bid from consideration on July 27.

Paris is considered a strong contender for the 2024 Olympics, which would be hosted on the 100 year anniversary of the 1924 Summer Games in the French capital. Despite the recent terrorist attacks in Paris, organizers are “more determined than ever” to host the Olympics.
