Former sports official in South Africa killed by intruders

JOHANNESBURG (AP) A former high-ranking South African sports official was shot and killed early Tuesday by armed robbers at his Johannesburg home, the national Olympic committee said.

Banele Sindani, who was a former chief executive of the South African Olympic committee, was 60. He also worked with Athletics South Africa and the Soweto Marathon.

''His passing was sudden and shocking to all of us,'' South African Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula said in a statement. ''We trust and hope the relevant authorities will find and bring to justice those who stole him from us.''
