Former English cricket board official hired by IOC

LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) A former official of the England and Wales cricket board is taking a new public affairs role with the International Olympic Committee.

Philip French, director of public policy and international relations at the ECB, was appointed Monday to the new IOC position of director of the department of Public Affairs and Social Development through Sport.

French, who is British, also previously held roles at the English Premier League and the British government's Department of Culture, Media and Sport.

The IOC says he will start the new job on March 1.

The IOC says the new department will work on projects promoting peace, sport, physical activity and humanitarian aid, and work closely with agencies of the United Nations and non-governmental organizations.
