CAS to rule on Bulgaria ban from Olympic weightlifting

LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) The Court of Arbitration for Sport expects to rule this week on Bulgaria's ban from Olympic weightlifting competition because of doping.

The Bulgarian federation had its appeal against exclusion from the Rio de Janeiro Games by the International Weightlifting Federation heard at the court on Monday.

CAS says it plans to issue an urgent ruling by Friday.

Last March, eight Bulgarian men and three women tested positive for the anabolic steroid stanozolol during training.

Bulgaria withdrew from the European Championships, and the 11 lifters were banned before the 2015 world championships in Houston, Texas.

In Houston, the IWF barred Bulgarian lifters from Olympic qualifying standings and imposed a $500,000 fine.

The Bulgarian team also withdrew before the 2008 Beijing Games for doping and was sent home from the 2000 Sydney Games.
