RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) Dipa Karmakar has become the first female gymnast from India to make the Olympics.

She posted an all-around score of 52.968 during the final Olympic qualifying event in Brazil over the weekend. That gave her a place in the individual all-around competition when the games begin in August.

Karmakar is a vaulting specialist and came in fifth in the vault finals at the 2015 world championships. She initially failed to earn a spot for the Olympic Test Event before joining field when other competitors pulled out. Karmakar's score of 15.066 on vault was the best of the 82 women at the meet.

Eleven Indian men have qualified for the Olympics since 1952, but none since the 1964 Tokyo Games.
