First mother, son pair to compete at the same Olympics in Rio

Georgian shooters Nino Salukvadze and her son Tsotne Machavariani will be the first mother and son combo to compete at the Olympics, according to OlympStats' Bill Mallon.
Salukvadze will be headed to her eighth Olympic team in 2016 after having won three medals. Salukvadze made her debut at the Summer Games as a member of the Soviet Union and won a gold medal in the 25–meter sporting pistol competition and a silver medal in the 10-meter air pistol competition.
She was also member of the Unified Team at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona before representing Georgia at the 1996, 2000, 2004 and 2008 and 2012 Olympics. She added a bronze medal in the 10-meter air pistol competition at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.
Salukvadze is just the second woman to compete in eight Summer Olympics. Only German-Italian canoeist Josefa Idem-Guerrini has accomplished the feat, according to Mallon.

Machavariani will be competing in his first Olympics.
The database observed by Mallon has found the father/son combo has competed at the Olympics together on 56 occasions. Father/daughter has happened 12 times. Mother/daughter has occurred just twice in history but not since 1908.
