Boudia, Johnson seize control in synchro at Olympic trials

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) David Boudia and Steele Johnson took a commanding lead of nearly 125 points Sunday in the men's synchro 10-meter event at the U.S. Olympic diving trials.

The heavy favorites to represent the Americans in Rio finished 12 dives with a total score of 835.56 in their home pool. Ryan Hawkins and Toby Stanley are second at 710.58.

Boudia, a Purdue grad, earned a bronze medal in the synchro event with a different partner four years ago in London and also won Olympic gold in the individual 10-meter event. In February, Boudia and Johnson teamed up for a fourth-place finish in a World Cup event at Rio, which gave the U.S. a qualifying spot in the synchro 10-meter.

Only the winner of Thursday's finals will make the American team.
