Rio Day 6: Biles, Raisman, Phelps and Lochte hunt for individual medals

The U.S. looks to add to its medal count on Thursday with Simone Biles and Aly Raisman going for individual gold in women’s gymnastics and Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte going head-to-head in the 200-meter medley.

RIO DE JANEIRO – For a number of athletes and teams, the mantra of the Olympics has been ‘survive and advance.’

For host Brazil, that applied to the men’s soccer team, which finally earned a win—scoring its first goals of the tournament in the process—to avoid elimination with a 4-0 win over Denmark on Wednesday.

The United States also avoided its own troubles in men’s basketball, coming from behind to beat Australia 98–88. U.S. boxer Nico Hernandez made his way to the semifinals of the men’s light fly division, while light welterweight Gary Russell moved on to the round of 16, with both making their way toward medals in their respective weight classes.

The United States added five medals to bring their total count to 11 gold, 11 silver and 10 bronze to remain atop the medal table, nine total ahead of China.
