Rio Olympics viewer’s guide: Tuesday, Aug. 16

Tuesday's events at Rio 2016 include women's soccer and medal events in track and field.

For those who have enjoyed the athletic brilliance of U.S. gymnasts Simone Biles and Aly Raisman over the past 10 days, the Olympic schedule on Tuesday offers one final opportunity to watch the all-around gold medalist (Biles) and silver medalist (Raisman) compete on a final apparatus. The women’s floor exercise highlights the gymnastic program (starts at 1:00 p.m. ET) at the Rio Olympic Arena, with Biles and Raisman as the heavy favorites. Medals will also be awarded in boxing, canoe/kayak, cycling, diving, equestrian, sailing, weightlifting and wrestling on a busy day in Rio.

What to watch (all times in Eastern Standard Time)

• The morning track program (starts at 8:30 a.m.) includes the men’s triple jump final (Christian Taylor of the U.S. is the defending champion; teammate Will Claye is also a favorite) and women’s discus final (the favorite is Croatia’s Sandra Perkovic).

• In the final day of individual apparatus finals (starts at 1:00 p.m.), men’s gymnasts will compete in the parallel bars and  high bar. Danell Leyva gets the call for the U.S. in the parallel bars and horizontal bar. Fellow American Sam Mikulak will be part of the horizontal bar group.

• The women’s soccer semifinals will be contested with host Brazil meeting Sweden (noon) and Canada taking on Germany at 3:00 p.m.

• Beach volleyball enters semifinal play with Larissa and Talita of Brazil taking on Germany’s Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst ( 3 p.m. ET/PT).

• Gold will be handed out in the men’s 3-meter springboard final (finals start at 5:00 p.m. ET). China's Cao Yuan and He Chao and Russia’s Ilya Zakharov are the favorites.

• American track cyclist  Sarah Hammer looks for the podium in women’s omnium after wining a silver in 2012 ( 5 p.m. ET).

• The undefeated U.S. women's basketball team begin knockout round play against Japan (5:30 p.m. ET)

• The highlight of the evening track and field program (begins at 7:30 p.m. ET) is the 110-meter hurdle finals where University of Oregon wide receiver Devon Allen is among the favorites along with Jamaicans Omar McLeod. Medals will also be given out in the men’s high jump and women’s 1500, where Ethiopia’s Genzebe Dibaba is the big favorite. (Genzebe's sister Tirunesh won five Olympic medals.) Track and field's evening session also features women's javelin, women's long jump qualifying, the men’s and women 400m hurdles semifinals and the women's 200m semis. Americans Tori Bowie, Deajah Stevens and Dafne Schippers of the Netherlands are the ones to watch in the 200.

• Americans Kerri Walsh Jennings and April Ross compete in the women’s beach volleyball semifinals against Brazil’s Bárbara Seixas and Ágatha Bednarczuk. The match is scheduled for 11:00 p.m. ET.

3:Career gold medals for Charlotte Dujardin of Great Britain, who retained her Olympic individual dressage title on Monday riding Valegro. She becomes only the second British woman to win three Olympic gold medals, tying cyclist Laura Trott.

1: Dutch woman in the history of the Olympic Games to win an individual gymnastics medal. On Monday SanneWevers took gold in the beam, beating out Biles and fellow American Laurie Hernandez.
