Three arrested in shooting death of Tyson Gay’s daughter, plead not guilty
Three men were arrested and charged in connection with the shooting death of Trinity Gay, the daughter of Olympic sprinter Tyson Gay. All three men pleaded not guilty.
Gay, 15, died Sunday after a shooting at a Kentucky restaurant.
Police in Lexington, Ky., responded to a report of shots fired at a restaurant around 4 a.m. Sunday, according to WKYT. Gay was shot in the neck and was pronounced dead at 4:41 a.m.
Authorities said in a statement that Chazerae Taylor, 38, and his son D’Markeo, 19, both face wanton endangerment counts, and Dvonta Middlebrooks, who fired multiple shots during the incident, is charged with wanton endangerment and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
According to witnesses, two cars exchanged gunfire, and police detained two suspects shortly after the shooting.
Police say Middlebrooks was in the parking lot of the restaurant before firing multiple shots. Court records state the Taylors also admitted to firing shots in the incident that killed Trinity Gay.
Gay was not a passenger in either car, police said. Police recovered a second vehicle that witnesses say left the scene of the shooting.
Gay was on the track team at Lafayette High School in Lexington, the same school her father attended.
Several of Tyson Gay’s teammates offered their condolences on social media.
Tyson Gay, 34, competed in his third Olympics this summer in Rio. Gay is a three-time world championship gold medalist including the 100-meter title at the 2007 world championships. In Rio, he was a member of the men's 4x100-meter relay team that finished third in the final before being disqualified due to an errant baton pass outside of the exchange zone.
Gay trains in Los Angeles but returned to Lexington on Sunday to be with his family.
