Cristiano Ronaldo snapped a three-game goal drought on Wednesday and gave Real Madrid a 1-0 first-half lead over Schalke 04.

Dani Carvajal sent a cross into the box near Ronaldo, who headed the ball into the goal.

The goal was Ronaldo's 73rd in the Champions League, placing him only two behind Lionel Messi's all-time record of 75. Ronaldo has also scored 58 goals in 58 Champions League games with Real Madrid.

Real Madrid and Schalke 04 met in last season's Champions League round of 16 as well, with Los Blancos winning 9-2 on aggregate.
