Real Madrid transfers goalkeeper Iker Casillas to FC Porto

Saturday July 11th, 2015

Real Madrid has announced an agreement to send longtime goalkeeper Iker Casillas to Portuguese club FC Porto, the club announced Saturday.

Casillas, 34, is regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in the history of Real Madrid and European soccer. He came up through Madrid's youth teams and has made 510 appearances for the first team, which he joined full-time in 1999. He was part of three Champions League title-winning teams and five La Liga championships with the club over the past 17 years. He also manned the posts during Spain's 2010 World Cup title run and European championships in 2008 and 2012, in addition to numerous individual honors.

Casillas has reportedly been unhappy at the way Madrid has handled his move, and turned down the chance at a send-off game at Madrid's Santiago Bernabeu stadium.

A farewell press conference has been scheduled for Sunday.

Real Madrid has been linked to Spanish keeper David De Gea of Manchester United as Casillas' replacement.
