Kyle Busch suffers compound leg fracture in crash at Daytona

Kyle Busch sustained a compound fracture of his right lower leg and a left mid-foot fracture in a crash during a NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Daytona International Speedway on Saturday. He will miss Sunday's Daytona 500 as a result of the injuries.

Busch's No. 54 Toyota veered toward the infield wall and struck a concrete wall head-on following an 11-car wreck on lap 112. He was put on a stretcher after being attended to by medical staff and was taken to Halifax Medical Center.

Busch, 29, was alert after the crash and appeared to have his right leg immobilized after being on the ground for several minutes.

Spotter Tony Hirschman said on the team radio that Busch was complaining of pain in his neck and back, reportsUSA Today.

After the crash, severaldriversstated on Twitter that walls should be have "SAFER" barriers installed around the entire track. Daytona International Speedway president Joie Chitwood said after the race that issue would be resolved.

"We should have had a SAFER barrier there today, we did not," Chitwood said. "We're going to fix that."

Matt Crafton will replace Busch in the Dayton 500. Without Busch, the race will be held without either Busch brother, as older brother Kurt Busch was suspended by NASCAR on Friday.
