Jack Beckman has another record Funny Car pass

KENT, Wash. (AP) Jack Beckman ran the quickest Funny Car pass in NHRA history for the second straight weekend, taking the No. 1 qualifying position Saturdau in the NHRA Northwest Nationals.

Beckman piloted his Dodge Charger R/T to a 3.912-second run at 322.88 mph at Pacific Raceways.

Beckman can certify the run as an NHRA national time record by posting another run within one percent during the remainder of the weekend. He set the mark of 3.921 last week in Sonoma, California.

''It's just a wonderful feeling,'' Beckman said. ''When you are a kid you dream for that moment of greatness but the reality is very few get to do it at the top level. I've had a lot of success in my career and a lot of phenomenal crew chiefs.''

Beckman also won two weeks ago in Colorado and is in position to become the second Funny Car driver and eighth overall to sweep the three events. He has five victories this year.

Richie Crampton led Top Fuel qualifying, and Chris McGaha topped the Pro Stock field.

Crampton had a track-record 3.727 pass at 323.50, and McGaha ran a 6.501 at 212.86 in a Chevy Camaro. McGaha tied Jeg Coughlin's elapsed time from Friday, but had a faster speed.
