Daytona's Chitwood promoted to ISC's chief operating officer

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) After overseeing a widely acclaimed $400 million upgrade of Daytona International Speedway, track President Joie Chitwood III is getting promoted.

International Speedway Corp. announced Monday that Chitwood has been named its chief operating officer. Chip Wile, president of Darlington Raceway, will replace Chitwood at NASCAR's most famous track.

ISC CEO Lesa France Kennedy says Chitwood ''played a tremendous role in the success of our flagship racetrack at Daytona International Speedway since 2010. His leadership of the Daytona Rising project, while simultaneously operating the facility, has demonstrated his operational acumen.''

Chitwood moves into the newly formed role of COO following oversight of the world's first motorsports stadium. In his new position, Chitwood will oversee ISC enterprise facility operations, along with strengthening key industry initiatives.
