Pigot joining Ed Carpenter Racing for road, street courses

Ed Carpenter Racing hopes Pigot brings home the bacon on road courses.

DETROIT (AP) — Indy Lights champion Spencer Pigot is joining Ed Carpenter Racing and will drive the No. 20 car for the remaining road and street course events on this year's IndyCar schedule.

ECR announced the move Thursday, with two races coming up this weekend at Belle Isle's street course in Detroit.

''I'm very excited to be joining Ed Carpenter Racing for the remainder of the season on road and street courses,'' Pigot said in a statement. ''ECR has been very strong in 2016 and I hope we can continue to build on the success they've already had.''

Team owner Ed Carpenter drives the No. 20 in oval events.

The 22-year-old Pigot made his IndyCar debut with Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing on March 13 in St. Petersburg, Florida, finishing 14th. He also competed in the Grand Prix of Indianapolis last month and in last weekend's Indianapolis 500.

Pigot was last year's Indy Lights champion, winning six races and four poles.

''We are really excited to be able to add Spencer to the ECR lineup and finish out the year with the 20 Fuzzy's Vodka car at all of the races,'' Carpenter said. ''Spencer is a definite young talent who came through the Road to Indy and we look forward to finishing the year strong with him!''

Pigot will compete in the two races this weekend, with Carpenter taking over the No. 20 again the following weekend on the oval at Texas Motor Speedway.
