Syracuse University tweets, then deletes, Jim Boeheim may retire
The official Twitter account for Syracuse University reported yesterday that Jim Boeheim's game against DePaul earlier in the night could possibly be his last at the Carrier Dome.
The tweet linked to a report from local sports site DYST Now in which the Athletic Director for the school was said to reportedly meet with the NCAA about possible violations last season and as a result would ask Boeheim to retire. Boeheim has been a coach with the team since 1976; with 913 wins, he is second all-time in Division I victories.
The tweet was deleted soon after it was posted, but school officials, despite scrambling to dismiss the report, would not confirm that the Twitter account was hacked.
Deadspin recapped the series of events and Syracuse basketball tweeted that an SU spokesman confirmed that the report is not true.
According to Deadspin, NBC Sports' EJ Argenio provided a response to the situation from Kevin Quinn, senior vice president of public affairs at the school:
That was inadvertently and mistakenly sent out. Nothing contained in the tweet or the blog link is accurate or true. We apologize for the confusion.
