Report: Orioles' Manny Machado 6-8 weeks ahead of schedule after knee surgery

Budding Baltimore Orioles star Manny Machado is six to eight weeks ahead of schedule in his recovery from offseason knee surgery, the Baltimore Sun's Dan Connolly reported Thursday.

Citing a source, Connolly reported that the third baseman Machado underwent a checkup on his surgically repaired left knee Thursday in California, where he received the good news. Orioles manager Buck Showalter told Connolly that the team had gotten a good report back from Machado's checkup. According to Connolly, if everything continues to go well, Machado should be ready for Opening Day.

Machado first injured his left knee while running to first base late last season. The 21-year-old hit .283 with 14 homers and 71 RBIs last season, his first full one in the majors. He also led the American League with 51 doubles.
