Report: Niners LB Aldon Smith pleads 'no contest' to weapons charges, misdemeanor DUI

San Francisco 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith pleaded "no contest" on Wednesday to weapons charges and a misdemeanor DUI, according to Tracey Kaplan of the San Jose Mercury News. 

Following the news, Cam Inman of the Bay Area News Group tweeted that Niners general manager Trent Baalke called Smith's plea "an important step towards bringing situation to a resolution."

Smith, 24, is expected to be sentenced on July 25, two days after the Niners report for training camp. According to the report from Kaplan, citing the prosecutor in the case, the 2012 Pro-Bowler faces anywhere from no jail time and only probation to four years and four months behind bars.

The three felony weapons charges stem from an incident in 2012 in which "gang members" stormed Smith's house and stabbed him and shot others. In the process, the weapons were found and reportedly belonged to Smith. The DUI stems from an incident in September in which he hit a tree and his blood alcohol content was almost twice the legal limit. On Wednesday, he admitted his BAC was 0.15, via a tweet from Inman. He also has a previous arrest in Florida for drunken driving, according to Kaplan. He subsequently spent six weeks in a substance abuse program last year and missed five games during that time.

It's not clear what kind of punishment the NFL will hand down to Smith once the legal proceedings wrap up. He also faces accusations that he made a bomb threat at LAX airport in April.
