U.S. men's national team striker Aron Johannsson underwent surgery on his right ankle, his club, AZ Alkmaar, announced on Tuesday.

The club announced earlier this month that Johannsson is expected to miss six to eight weeks after the surgery.

Johannsson posted a picture of himself lying on a hospital bed after the procedure.

Johannsson, 23, came on as a substitute after Jozy Altidore went down with a hamstring injury in the first half of USA's 2-1 win over Ghana in the opening game of World Cup group play. It is not known whether or to what extent the ankle hampered him in Brazil.

The recovery timeline calls into question whether Johannsson will be ready for USA's Sept. 2 friendly against the Czech Republic in Prague.

Johannsson scored 26 goals in all competitions for Alkmaar last season.
