Joachim Loew announces he will stay as coach of Germany
Germany coach Joachim Loew will honor the two-year contract extension he signed before the World Cup began, he told the German Football Federation on Wednesday.
There had been chatter that Loew might step down from the position after he coached the team to the World Cup title, but he put those rumors to rest.
"I just needed a few days to get a grip of all my feelings and for my focus to become clear again," he said.
Loew, who replaced Jurgen Klinsmann in 2006, has reached at least the semifinals in all four tournaments during his time as Germany's coach.
He is ready to continue building the program and is not satisfied after winning the World Cup.
"I am as motivated as I was on the first day with DFB. We celebrated a gigantic success in Brazil but there are other goals that we want to achieve. The World Cup 2014 was a highlight for all, but it was not a conclusion."
Germany will need to find a replacement for captain Philipp Lahm, who retired from international competition following the team's World Cup victory.
