Chelsea finished in third place in the Barclays Premier League last season, four points behind champion Manchester City. They were led in scoring by Eden Hazard, who had 14 goals, and Samuel Eto'o, who had nine.

During the offseason, Jose Mourinho's club notably signed Diego Costa from Atletico Madrid, Cesc Fabregas from Barcelona and Didier Drogba from Galatasaray, though Chelsea did lose David Luiz to PSG and Romelu Lukaku to Everton.

Frank Lampard announced he was leaving the team after 13 seasons for MLS side New York City FC, and Christian Atsu was loaned to Everton for the 2014-15 season.
