U.S. national team forward Alex Morgan was forced to leave the World Cup qualifier against Guatemala on Friday night due to a sprained left ankle.

With the U.S. leading 1-0 in the 38th minute, Morgan got her feet tangled with a Guatemala player while chasing a ball and appeared to twist her ankle as she went to the ground.

Morgan looked to be in significant pain before being helped off the field by two trainers without putting much weight on her ankle. She was ruled out for the rest of the game and replaced by Christen Press.

Morgan will undergo a scan on her ankle Friday night or Saturday, according to Fox Sports's Jenny Taft. It's currently unknown how much time she will miss.

The injury is particularly troubling because of previous issues with Morgan's left ankle. She was out from last November until June due to a separate ankle injury.

A mainstay on the U.S. national team for the past three years, Morgan has made 75 total international appearances and scored 49 goals. She helped the U.S. to a second-place finish in the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup and the gold medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics.

Morgan also plays for Portland Thorns FC of the NWSL.

The U.S.'s game against Guatemala was its second of CONCACAF Women's World Cup qualifying. The team defeated Trinidad and Tobago 1-0 on Wednesday.
