Greece suspends professional soccer after referee offical attacked
All matches in Greece's professional soccer leagues have been suspended after a referees' committee official was violently attacked, according to The Guardian.
According to police, the assistant director of the central refereeing committee, Christoforos Zografos, was beaten with wooden clubs by two men in west Athens on Friday and was taken to a hospital.
The Hellenic Football Federation called the attack "murderous" and held an emergency meeting, deciding to indefinitely postpone all matches.
According to The Guardian, the indefinite suspension will hold and referees will not be appointed for future matches until "immediate steps" are taken to protect referees.
This is the second recent occurrence where professional soccer in Greece has been suspended. In September, the government suspended matches died from violent clashes at a third division match between Irodotos and Ethnikos. The home team later was later sanctioned by the Greek soccer association.
