Bayern Munich captain Philipp Lahm underwent surgery on his fractured ankle on Thursday, the team announced

The injury occurred recently during training and Lahm is expected to be out for three months. According to the team, the fracture was repaired and fixed using a surgical plate and screw. Lahm has been ordered to rest his right leg for several weeks before starting a rehabilitation program.

The 31-year-old helped Germany win the World Cup over the summer, and soon after, he retired from international competition. He has been used in a midfield role this season and has scored two goals on 18 shots and recorded five assists in 24 appearances.

In the 2014-15 German Bundesliga season, Lahm has two goals and two assists in 11 appearances.

Bayern is currently in first place in the league with 27 points. They play Hoffenheim on Saturday when club play resumes.
