Thierry Henry not returning to New York Red Bulls next season

Red Bulls forward Thierry Henry will not return to the club next season after spending the past four seasons with the club.

New York Red Bulls forward Thierry Henry will not return to the club next season, Henry and the Red Bulls announced Monday.

SI.com reported in October that there was "zero chance" that Henry would sign an extension and return to the Red Bulls next season.

The Red Bulls were eliminated from the playoffs on Saturday after falling 4-3 on aggregate to the New England Revolution.

Henry, a four-time MLS All-Star, spent more than four seasons with the Red Bulls, making 122 appearances and 118 starts. He owns four club records, including assists, game-winning goals, and shots, and his 51 goals are the second-most in franchise history.

This season, Henry scored 10 goals on 27 shots on goal and recorded a team-high 14 assists. Despite winning the Supporters' Shield in 2013, the Red Bulls' run to the 2014 Eastern Conference Final was Henry's best postseason finish.

Henry led the Red Bulls to the playoffs every season he was with the club, and in 13 playoffs appearances, he scored one goal and had seven assists.

“I have immensely enjoyed my four and half years here and would like to thank everyone involved with this club who has made my time here so enjoyable,” Henry said.

Henry, 37, was named to the MLS Best XI in 2011 and 2012 and was a finalist for the MLS Most Valuable Player award in 2012.

“A special mention must go to the Red Bull fans who have supported this team through the good, the bad and the ugly times in the sun, rain and snow. You guys have really meant a lot to me and thank you for all your wonderful support," Henry said.
