Watch: Hope Solo saves penalty kick to preserve Algarve Cup shutout
With the U.S. women's national team putting the finishing touches on its 10th Algarve Cup title, Hope Solo made sure the championship game ended without a blemish.
After Meghan Klingenberg was whistled for a penalty after yanking Marie-Laure Delie's arm in the box, Solo saved Amandine Henry's ensuing penalty kick in the 82nd minute, preserving the 2-0 scoreline over France that the USA maintained until the final whistle.
The win exacted an amount of revenge for Jill Ellis' side, which had lost to France 2-0 in a friendly last month.
Solo conceded just one goal during four matches in the Algarve Cup–and none in the final three matches–to mark her return from a 30-day suspension. The U.S. women return to the field on April 4 in St. Louis, taking on New Zealand.
The Americans then take on Ireland, Mexico and South Korea in a three-game send-off series before beginning the World Cup against Australia on June 8 in Winnipeg, Canada.
