Watch: Nadine Angerer makes PK save, sends Germany to WWC semis
Germany and France played the most compelling game of the Women's World Cup Friday, and it hinged on a single penalty save after 120 even minutes.
Nadine Angerer stopped Claire Lavogez–the only non-conversion in the penalty round–to send Germany through to the semifinals in PKs (5-4) after the two European powers played to a 1-1 draw.
Louisa Necib had given France the lead on a deflected shot in the 64th minute, making up for a first-minute miss and another first-half chance that Angerer managed to save. Germany responded late, though, with Celia Sasic converting an 84th-minute penalty kick after a France handball for her tournament-leading sixth goal.
France had a golden chance to win late in extra time, with Gaetane Thiney missing a wide-open volley by the far post, and it came back to haunt Les Bleues.
Thiney converted France's first penalty, and both teams ran the table in the PK round until Lavogez, the 21-year-old substitute, tried to go to Angerer's left. The Portland Thorns goalkeeper and 2013 FIFA World Player of the Year read it all the way, though, keeping Germany's quest for a record third World Cup title on track. Watch the save below:
