Watch: Germany's Celia Sasic misses penalty kick against USWNT
Germany's Celia Sasic missed a penalty kick wide left of the net during the Women's World Cup semifinal game Tuesday night again the United States, blowing a chance to give Germany the lead in what wound up being a 2-0 loss to the Americans.
Had Sasic made the shot, as she did twice during Germany's quarterfinal victory over France earlier in the tournament (once in regulation to tie the score, once in the penalty shootout) she would have broken a scoreless draw and ended the USWNT's shutout streak at 483 minutes. She put her penalty wide of the vacated side of the net while Hope Solo dove the other direction, though, keeping Germany off the board. It was Germany's first penalty miss in its Women's World Cup history.
Germany was awarded the penalty when U.S. center back Julie Johnston was called for a foul and yellow carded for pulling down Alexandra Popp.
The USWNT later went up 1–0 when Carli Lloyd netted a penalty kick in the 68th minute and 2–0 when Kelley O'Hara scored in the waning minutes to seal the win.
